As SER enters the next phase of leadership, we will continue to maintain the three pillars the journal was built upon, but also seek to find new ways to grow the publication with high quality contributions that speak to industry partners. To do so, the journal will continue to publish the Review and Practice in the Field sections, but has also launched a new White Paper section.
The Review Paper. Under the Review Paper section, authors should draw upon previous research they conducted in a particular area and should show how their previous studies furthered the body of knowledge. Articles should be written for senior managers who will benefit by clearly articulating how the knowledge can be applied to the workplace. Further, the ideas presented in the articles should be translated into action by providing clear managerial strategies that can be applied to the industry context and meet the readers’ needs. Submissions should be written in clear, jargon-free language. As a reminder to potential contributors, this journal is somewhat unique in our field and our submission process is different as well. We do not require scholars to submit a full manuscript for review. Instead, we ask them to pitch an idea to the editors within 250-500 words, meeting the following criteria:
- What is your research background in this area? Upon what previous work (either of your own or that of others) does this idea build?
- What does industry need to know about your research agenda? Why is this important to practitioners?
- What are your conclusions and recommendations to industry?
- For which kinds of companies would your idea work especially well?
- What is the applicability of your idea beyond your own discipline of sport or entertainment, and how can it benefit the other fields in sport and/or entertainment?
The proposal should address the questions above, describe the structure of the article, and detail each important point with examples. Upon editorial review of the proposal, authors will be asked to submit a full manuscript up to 8,000 words. The review article is peer reviewed.
The Practice in the Field Paper. Under the section titled Practice in the Field, we invite scholars to provide a narrative of how they collaborated with industry and how they used their scholarly expertise to provide value to these organizations. In this paper, authors should raise issues observed through this interaction and/or forecast trends. This paper does not necessarily provide solutions, but these can be discussed. These articles, between 3,000 to 6,000 words in length, should focus on the author’s efforts to work with practitioners, and the challenges and opportunities of the partnership. Authors can email the editor to receive feedback on a particular idea or submit a manuscript directly. This submission is peer-reviewed.
The White Paper. The White Papers option should provide a snapshot of an industry problem with solutions that are based on evidence. Papers should provide relevant background, clear articulation of the problem and what it affects, qualitative and/or quantitative evidence to support conclusions and recommendations. White papers are intended to be useful for industry partners, and should not be used as commentary pieces of previously published research (e.g., response article), or duplicate previously published work by the author(s). Unlike the review papers, the authors will not be asked to write a proposal, but instead write a full first draft of the manuscript for review. The manuscript should be between 3,000 to 6,000 words in length. This submission is peer reviewed.
The Industry Connection. The Industry Connection option offered by SER is an editorial reviewed submission that focuses on interaction with industry. This could be a written overview of a panel discussion or interview with an industry partner. The purpose of the industry connection is to highlight key discussions, new industry insights, or other key communications. The manuscript should be under 5,000 words in length.
Sport and Entertainment Review Submission Guidelines
SER seeks to be one of the world’s leading journals publishing cutting-edge authoritative thinking on key issues facing executives in the world of sport and entertainment. Articles published in SER cover a wide range of topics that are relevant to the different industries in sport and entertainment (such as professional sport, live performances, music, theater, dance and art, etc.) around the world. To further enhance these industries, we invite authors to submit articles of interest to practitioners in three different formats:
- Review papers (theoretical explorations of a subject that is relevant to industry)—500-750 word narrative outline proposal, developed into a 8,000 word manuscript if accepted.
- White papers (short to the point empirical explorations relevant to industry)—up to 3,000-6,000 word manuscript; and do not require a proposal.
- Practice in the Field: Beyond the publication (creative explorations of how a scholar worked with the industry)—a creative manuscript of 3,000-6,000 words.
- Industry Connection (interviews or panel discussions with industry) – an overview of a discussion of key industry insights under 5,000 words.
Proposals on topics for the review papers must be accepted prior to article submission. Authors should submit only original, previously unpublished work that has not been concurrently submitted or under consideration elsewhere for publication.
How to Prepare the Manuscript
Manuscripts are submitted electronically in a Microsoft Word format to Dr. Bri Newland, editor, at bri.newland@nyu.edu, Dr. Brian Soebbing, associate editor, at brian.soebbing@ualberta.ca or Dr. Thomas Aicher, assistant editor, at taicher@uccs.edu
Since manuscripts are evaluated anonymously, author names should not appear anywhere in the manuscript, or within the properties of submitted file. Submit with the manuscript a separate cover sheet that contains the following information: title, author(s) name(s), mailing address(es), preferred phone and fax numbers, and email address(es). Please identify the order of authors and the corresponding author on the cover sheet.
Manuscripts should be double-spaced with 1-inch margins, using an easily readable 12-point font. Authors should follow the style of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition) in preparing all text, tables, and figures (e.g., italics used to report statistical information, indented second line in references listing). Please use English (US), when preparing your manuscript.
Review papers should not exceed 8,000 words, including text, tables, figures, charts, footnotes, and references. White papers should not exceed 6,000 words. Practice in the Field papers should not exceed 6,000 words. Industry Connections should not exceed 5,000 words.
